What was Gandhara?

Gandhara was an ancient cultural region centred in and around parts of present-day northwestern Pakistan and eastern Afghanistan. Its history brought South Asian, Iranian, Hellenistic and Central Asian influences into contact.

Gandhara is especially significant for the history of Buddhist art and monastic culture. Archaeological remains across Pakistan include monasteries, stupas, sculptures and urban sites associated with this wider cultural world.

Gandhara and Buddhist pilgrimage

A Gandhara-focused journey can connect archaeological sites with museum collections and landscapes rather than treating each monument as an isolated stop.
